Twice this week, two different people, told me I wasn't myself.


The first time I brushed it off. People say things. The second time, a different person in a different room, I couldn't.


Here's the part that stayed with me. I did feel slightly off that week. I just didn't think anyone could tell.


I thought I was managing it. I was broadcasting it.


We carry a quiet belief that our inner state is our own business. That if we hold the outside together, smile in the right places, say the right things, the noise inside stays private.


It doesn't.


People feel your state long before they parse your words. The half second delay before you laugh. The eye contact that lands a beat late. The energy that says present while the body is clearly somewhere else.


The room reads your Inner Game first, and your performance second.


This is uncomfortable for high performers, because performing is exactly how we learned to cope. Off day? Push harder. Distracted? Smile wider. We treat the surface as the problem and polish it.


But the surface was never the problem. The surface is a screen, and everyone in the room can see what's being projected onto it.


I watch founders do this at scale. They walk into a board meeting carrying something heavy and decide to be professional about it. They think the discipline is in hiding it. The room just meets a leader who feels guarded, and trusts the words a little less without knowing why.


You can't outperform what you haven't dealt with.


So what's the actual move. It isn't to perform harder, and it isn't to narrate every feeling you have. Both miss it.


The move is to deal with the state itself, before the room deals with it for you.


Sometimes that's naming it plainly: I'm a bit off today, give me a minute. Honesty lowers the volume of what you're broadcasting faster than any mask.


Sometimes it's earlier than that. It's the run you skipped, the conversation you keep avoiding, the recovery you trade away for one more hour of output. The leak in the room usually started days before, somewhere quiet.


Energy before time. State before strategy. Inner Game first, always.


The two people who told me I wasn't myself weren't criticising me. They were handing me data I couldn't see from the inside.


That's the gift buried in it. The room will always tell you the truth about your state, if you're willing to hear it.

Hiding your state feels considerate. It isn't. It just moves the cost onto the room.


You experience the mask as effort. They experience it as something off they can't name, so they trust the words a little less.


And most won't tell you. The two who do are the rare ones. Everyone else just adjusts quietly, and you never learn why the meeting felt heavy.


The mask was never protection. It was a tax everyone pays except you.

Name it first. Before your next hard meeting, say "I'm a bit off today" instead of performing through it. Honesty drops the volume faster than any mask.


Find the leak. Spot the recovery you traded this week, the run, the sleep, the conversation, and put one back tomorrow.


Ask the room. Ask one person you trust what energy you've been giving off. Then say nothing and listen.
